“Dr. Alford and Mr. Singer bring a deep understanding of student needs and a strong commitment to collaboration and service,” said Superintendent Dr. Kevin Maddox. “Their leadership will strengthen our student support systems and ensure we are meeting the academic and social needs of all students across the district.”
Dr. Michael Alford will begin his new role as Lead Coordinator of Student Services on May 1, transitioning from his current position as the district’s Student Services Specialist, where he has led initiatives to support and promote positive school attendance, enhance student engagement, and strengthen partnerships with families to build student success. With 22 years of experience in education, he brings a wealth of knowledge in student services, school improvement, and strategic collaboration. He began his career as a kindergarten teacher and went on to serve as an instructional coach and high school assistant principal before joining HCS.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Alford holds multiple civic and professional leadership roles across the state. He currently serves as Vice President of the Alabama Association of Prevention, Attendance, and Support Services, is a member of the Board of Directors for YouthServe of Birmingham, and is a graduate of the 2024 Leadership Hoover Class. He also serves as a Leadership Hoover: Ignite Advisor and is a committee member for the Alabama Attendance Manual.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Stillman College and a master’s degree in educational leadership and elementary education from the University of West Alabama. He also holds an educational specialist degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and earned his doctorate in educational leadership from Samford University.
“It is an honor to continue serving the students, families, and staff of Hoover City Schools in this new capacity,” Dr. Alford said. “I look forward to working alongside our team to support meaningful growth for all of our students.”
Jeff Singer will transition into his new role as Coordinator of Student Services on June 1, bringing more than 25 years of administrative, instructional, and student support experience to the position. He currently serves as the district’s Coordinator of At-Risk Services and Administrator at Crossroads/Second Chance, where he has developed and implemented a positive school culture in an alternative school setting to support students in need of targeted behavioral and academic interventions.
Singer has served in multiple leadership roles throughout his career, including principal and assistant principal at both the elementary and intermediate levels. He began his career as a language arts teacher at Simmons Middle School.
In addition to his school-based leadership roles, he has contributed to district-wide efforts to support student success. He is an active member of the district’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Committee and the Student Educational Initiatives Committee, where he helps guide strategic efforts to improve student outcomes across the district. Singer holds a bachelor's degree in language arts from the University of Montevallo. He earned both his master's degree and educational specialist degree in educational leadership from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
"It has been my pleasure to collaborate with Hoover City Schools shareholders in a variety of roles supporting service delivery across the district,” Singer said. “I’m excited for the opportunity to continue supporting student learning and to further the district’s mission and vision in this new capacity."
In their new roles, Dr. Michael Alford and Jeff Singer will support the school system’s mission by leading key functions within the Office of Student Services. Their responsibilities will include developing and maintaining district-wide attendance programs, supporting enrollment verification, and ensuring compliance with compulsory education laws. They will serve as liaisons between the district, schools, families, courts, and community agencies to directly support students and families while assisting with interventions for at-risk students. As vital members of Hoover’s student advocacy team, they will help ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive academically and socially.
